It is back-to-school time again and one important thing that parents and kids need to prepare for is their dental hygiene. Neglecting a child’s dental health can be a reason for their missed school days. We do not want our kids to miss important lessons in class, so it is best to have their teeth checked before class begins to avoid any mishaps in the middle of class.

Before the classes start there are different dental things you need to secure your child: dental check-ups, care tips for their braces (if there is), and dental care tips for kids and parents.

Back to School Dental Check-Up

Dental check-ups and teeth cleaning are mandatory every six months for a child’s oral health routine. For every six months, a lot has changed with a kid’s teeth. It is beneficial if they will undergo orthodontic treatment before they develop early signs of a cavity. Seeing a dentist regularly will help identify dental issues before they become worse.

Back to School with Braces

Some kids have new gears when they go back to school and one of these is having braces. Having braces requires different oral care which kids need to know and do when they go back to school.

Kids with braces need to find time to brush their teeth after eating lunch.

  1. Prepare a braces kit for school that may include toothbrush, floss, toothpaste, and dental wax.
  2. Orient your kid of what to do and whom to go to when they encounter brace emergencies.
  3. Keep your child hydrated. Make them carry a water bottle to rinse their mouth and rinse the bacteria throughout the day.

Having braces means having limitations on food intake. Remind your kids to eat and maintain healthy eating habits and brace-friendly foods.

Dental Tips for Back to School

Have a dental routine especially for kids wearing braces. A morning brush prep is necessary as well as nighttime brushing. Flossing is important and consistency is key for kids of all ages.

  1. Let the kids choose their toothbrush and toothpaste so that they can enjoy the experience and enjoy what they choose.
  2. Encourage them to drink plenty of water and avoid sugary drinks.
  3. Older siblings can help set an example for younger ones especially with good oral hygiene.
  4. Give rewards especially if they are consistent with their dental care routines. It helps to encourage them to continue brushing their teeth and maintain good oral hygiene.
  5. Invest in dental protection such as mouth guards, especially if your kid is into sports.

Oral health is important especially for kids. It is equally important to train them what they should do with their teeth, especially when they are already back to school. Being consistent with their dental routine is key for them to keep their dental hygiene okay.
